1. GET THE EDGE: IMAGE STRATEGIES AND NETWORKING SKILLS

This workshop for Illinois graduate students will teach you how to make a positive first impression, how to dress for success, and how to network and work the room with ease. Get the edge you need to succeed! Workshop facilitator Jill Bremer of Bremer Communications has appeared as a trainer and speaker for corporations and organizations throughout the country. She has appeared on the Today show and CNBC and is frequently quoted in major publications. She is the co-author of Its Your Move: Dealing Yourself the Best Cards in Life and Work and a contributing author for Rude Awakenings: Overcoming the Civility Crisis in the Workplace.

2. HOW TO FIND A JOB OUTSIDE OF ACADEMIA, EVEN IF YOU AREN'T SURE THAT YOU WANT ONE

Have you ever considered what your job opportunities might be outside academia?
Can a non-academic job really be rewarding? Are you afraid your options may be limited?
If so, join us on March 6 as Susan Basalla May, co-author of "So What Are You Going to Do With That?: Finding Careers Outside Academe," talks about the challenges and opportunities for advanced-degree holders. Susan Basalla specializes in helping graduate students and faculty members find innovative ways to apply their skills outside academia, and she will provide graduate students with ideas and strategies for making the most of advanced degrees.
The first 200 graduate students to arrive to Dr. Basalla's talk will receive a FREE copy of her book, "So What Are You Going to Do With That?: Finding Careers Outside Academia," http://www.press.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/hfs.cgi/00/222067.ctl.
Basalla earned her Ph.D. in English from Princeton University and worked in journalism and new media for six years before joining Art & Science Group, a consulting firm focused on higher education, in 2004. She has been a regular contributor to the Chronicle of Higher Education's "Beyond the Ivory Tower" column since 2002.
This event is part of the Graduate College's annual PhD Completion Project Speaker's Series, and is underwritten in part by grant funding from the Council of Graduate Schools.

The Non-Profit & Government Career Fair offers a wonderful opportunity for all students, regardless of major or year in school, to meet with representatives from various non-profit and governmental agencies.
The Fair is open to all graduate and undergraduate UIUC students seeking full-time, part-time, internship, summer or volunteer positions. Students are encouraged to come out to learn about the wide variety of degrees and experiences that these organizations are seeking. This Fair provides insight into the competitive salaries and the opportunities for professional growth and career advancement with non-profit and governmental agencies.

7. THE GRADUATE COLLEGE CAREER SERVICES OFFICE
The Graduate College Career Services Office (GCCSO) assists University of Illinois graduate students with decision making and planning for career paths both within and beyond the academy. It is a centralized resource for graduate students from all disciplines, with services focused especially on the needs of graduate students in the humanities, the social sciences, the fine arts, and other areas in which students are not presently served by dedicated, discipline-based career services offices.
