1. New Assistant Director Joins Career Services

Beginning May 12, 2008 the Graduate College welcomes Alexis Thompson as Assistant Director of Career Services. Thompson received her undergraduate education at Trinity University in San Antonio and will receive her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Illinois this May. With a longstanding interest in graduate education and graduate student professional development, she has previously collaborated to provide career and professional development resources for graduate students through the chemistry departmental and the American Chemical Society.

2. New Summer Hours for Walk-in Advising

Starting the week of May 12, walk-in advising hours will be held from 9:00 – 11:45 a.m. on Wednesdays only.

3. Dissertation Writing Workshop

Friday, June 20
1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Levis Center (Third Floor)

Facilitator Greg Lambeth will help students develop realistic, pragmatic solutions to aid dissertation completion. Through a series of exercises, participants will evaluate how to set priorities, formulate a time management plan, monitor future progress, and balance personal and academic responsibilities, as well as how to avoid obstacles like procrastination, perfectionism, and adviser conflicts.

Greg Lambeth is a clinical psychologist at the Counseling Center. He completed his dissertation at the University of Texas in 1993 and has worked with graduate students at the University of Illinois on issues related to dissertation completion since 1994.

5. HACE 22nd Chicago Career Conference

The Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE) will hold its 22nd Chicago Career Conference on June 17, 2008. Meet with over 75 Fortune 500 companies, non-profits, government institutions, associations, and educational institutions. Professional development workshop offered by business and industry leaders. Business attire required. Take plenty of resumes.

6. Career Opportunities in Public Health

The Illinois Public Health Association (IPHA), a not-for-profit voluntary organization is accepting applications for AmeriCorps members for the 2008-09 program year. Members will be placed with local health departments and community-based agencies across Illinois. These are full-time positions, which include a monthly stipend, education award, health insurance and professional development opportunities. Successful candidates will have knowledge and practical experience with public health issues as well as strong leadership, organization, written and oral communication and computer skills.

IPHA AmeriCorps members serve full-time (1700 hours) for 11 months at their host site. While serving, members receive a living allowance of $11,400, health insurance, professional development, child-care subsidies (if eligible), and loan deferment. After the 1700 hours are fully completed, the member will receive an education award for $4,725 to be used to pay back qualified student loans or attend an institution of higher education.

The 2008-09 program year will begin September 2, 2008 and run until July 31, 2009. Applications are due June 20, 2008. For more information, check out our website at www.ipha.com/americorps.php or www.americorps.org.

7. The Graduate College Career Services Office

The Graduate College Career Services Office (GCCSO) assists University of Illinois graduate students with decision making and planning for career paths both within and beyond the academy. It is a centralized resource for graduate students from all disciplines, with services focused especially on the needs of graduate students in the humanities, the social sciences, the fine arts, and other areas in which students are not presently served by dedicated, discipline-based career services offices. GCCSO staff provides advising, special programs, resources, and referrals to help students with career choices and with the job search. For more information, see www.grad.uiuc.edu/careerservices/.
