A Conversation on Graduate Mentoring (for Faculty)

Come join us for an interactive discussion of best practices for mentoring graduate students led by experienced faculty.  Ask questions, share your thoughts, and learn about the successes of other faculty members who mentor graduate students.



Taking Charge:  Building a Productive Relationship with Your Adviser (registration required)

This workshop will examine factors that contribute to a positive working relationship between graduate students and faculty advisors.  It will explore some of the problems that occur in mentoring relationships and what graduate students can do to help resolve them.  The workshop will include small group activities designed to engage participants in evaluating the responsibilities of both graduate students and faculty in developing a positive working relationship.



Becoming a Good Mentor:  The Transition from Graduate Student to Faculty Member (for graduate students)

Thursday, March 19
3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
407 Illini Union

Are you preparing to start a faculty job soon?  You’re an expert in your field, and may even have many years of teaching experience, but are you prepared to be a mentor to graduate students?.  Bring your questions to an interactive discussion about becoming a faculty mentor.   Faculty members from a variety of disciplines will talk about their experiences moving to a faculty position and provide suggestions for how to make the transition smoothly.



Reading Groups on Graduate Mentoring

Have questions about mentoring? Looking for new approaches? Join a reading group and discuss literature about current research and practice for mentoring. Reading groups start in March.   E-mail Grad@illinois.edu if you are interested in participating or have a topic to suggest.  Possible topics could include

  • Mentoring and time to degree
  • Mentoring in a multicultural environment
  • Mentoring outside the adviser-student relationship
