Symposium on Graduate Education

Mentoring Inside/Out

An event for graduate faculty, students, and staff

Thursday, February 26, 2009
1:00 - 4:30 p.m. (with reception to follow)
Illini Union Rooms B & C

Experience mentoring from the other side at this interactive theater event led by the CRLT Players. Through a series of thought-provoking theatrical sketches, the CRLT Players encourage audience members to explore and discuss the unique challenges of graduate mentoring, including unarticulated expectations, demanding schedules, and the divergent perspectives of students and faculty. Participants can then relate the sketches to their personal experiences, become aware of others’ perspectives, and begin to identify new approaches to their own mentoring relationships.

Founded in 1962 as the first teaching center in the country, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan works with faculty, instructors and administrators to support and enhance learning and teaching. As part of that mission, the CRLT Players is a unique group that uses interactive theater to inspire conversations about issues highly relevant to academic culture. Their vignettes of the mentoring relationship between a graduate student and faculty member highlight themes, challenges and strategies that occur across disciplines.

Initiated by the Graduate College in 2003, the Symposium on Graduate Education was developed to bring attention to graduate education, research, and career planning. This annual event provides a venue for faculty, students and staff to discuss issues that are distinct to graduate education. Since 2006 the Graduate College has also hosted an annual workshop for faculty called the Practical Mentoring of Graduate Students, an initiative of the PhD Completion Project. These two events are combined this year to address the topic of graduate mentoring with the CRLT Players and the graduate community at Illinois.

This event is free and open to the entire campus community.
