This contains important information on Summer 2008 health coverage for all graduate students. To make the information more useful, we have organized it into four sections:
- Summer Assistants
- Summer Fellows
- Students With No Summer Appointments
- Individuals Who Graduated May 2008
For more information, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions at www.grad.uiuc.edu/fellowship/healthinsfaq.cfm. If you have questions not addressed in the FAQ, please contact the Graduate College at grad@uiuc.edu.
Summer Assistants
All graduate students with a waiver-generating assistantship appointment (i.e., a research, teaching, pre-professional, or graduate assistantship of at least 25% and not more than 67% for at least 41 days of the summer term) are entitled to health care benefits provided by the University during the term of the appointment. The 2008 summer term is defined as the period between May 12 and August 2. The health benefits include full coverage of the health service (McKinley) fee and partial payment ($130) of the health insurance fee for students who were covered under the plan during the Spring 2008 term. Summer assistants will also receive basic dental and vision coverage.
Assistants who have registered or plan to register for Summer 2008
Registration in at least three hours in Summer 2008 will automatically trigger the assessment of the appropriate fees and the processing of the appropriate health care benefits for students with a waiver-generating assistantship. The benefits will not be credited to your student account until the assistantship is reflected in the campus system. A student may seek treatment from McKinley Health Center before the summer assistantship has been fully processed by signing an agreement to pay the fee in the event that the appointment does not materialize.
Assistants who do not plan to register for Summer 2008
If you have a summer waiver-generating assistantship and are not required by your program to register for summer, you must sign up for summer health coverage at https://www.grad.uiuc.edu/healthins/ by June 23, 2008. If you do not sign up, the campus will be unable to process the health benefits to which you are entitled with your assistantship. Completing the sign-up is simple and should take less than five minutes.
For more information, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions section at www.grad.uiuc.edu/fellowship/healthinsfaq.cfm. If you have questions not addressed in the FAQ, please contact the Graduate College at grad@uiuc.edu.
Summer Fellows
Students with waiver-generating fellowships for the summer are required to register for at least four hours in an eight-week course. The registration for at least four hours in Summer 2008 will trigger the assessment of the appropriate fees and the processing of the appropriate health care benefits. The benefits will not be credited to your student account until the fellowship appointment is reflected in the campus system. The health benefits include full coverage of the health service (McKinley) fee and partial payment ($130) of the health insurance fee for students who were covered under the plan during Spring 2008. Summer Fellows also receive basic dental and vision coverage. A student may seek treatment from McKinley Health Center before the summer fellowship has been fully processed by signing an agreement to pay the fee in the event that the appointment does not materialize.
Fellows may direct questions about their fellowship waiver to the Graduate College Fellowship Office at gradfellowships@uiuc.edu.
Students With No Summer Appointments
Students who were registered during spring term and received health coverage can receive summer health benefits through two mechanisms -
- If a student registers for at least three hours in the summer term, the student will be assessed both the health service (McKinley) fee and the health insurance fee (unless the student has received an exemption of the health insurance fee). The student would be responsible for paying the full amount of the assessed fees.
- If a student does not register during summer, the student must purchase an extension in order to receive health coverage. The deadline to request an extension for health insurance for Summer 2008 is June 23, 2008. To request an extension of student health insurance, you must sign up at https://www.grad.uiuc.edu/healthins/. To request an extension of the health service (McKinley) fee, you must visit McKinley. More information is available at www.mckinley.uiuc.edu./units/business_office.htm.
Individuals Who Graduated May 2008
Individuals who graduated in May 2008 have the option of extending their student health insurance for one or two semesters if they had coverage in Spring 2008. The deadline to request an extension is June 23, 2008. Information and forms are available at www.si.uiuc.edu.
