Dental and Vision Insurance Enrollment Period
Students without waiver-generating appointments may
voluntarily enroll in dental and/or vision insurance plans by
paying the annual premiums. (Students with waiver-generating
appointments will be automatically enrolled.) Graduate students
may also purchase coverage for dependents.
Students wishing to purchase coverage for themselves or
dependents must do so during the enrollment period:
September 1 - September 30, 2009

Seeking Nominations for International Achievement Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 International
Achievement Awards. The awards recognize five categories of
exceptional international achievement: alumni, distinguished
faculty member, young humanitarian, and graduate and
undergraduate student.

The Presidential Management Fellowship Workshop
Thursday, September 10, 1:00-2:30 PM, 407 Illini Union

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program can be a
prestigious entry point for an exciting career in the U.S. government.
After an overview of the program, PMF fellow Chris Wood will answer
questions about the program and application process. October 15, 2009
is the application deadline for students graduating with advanced
degrees (masters, law or doctorate) between September 2009 and
August 2010. Please note the PMFs must possess United States
citizenship by the conclusion of the two-year fellowship.

Graduate College Thesis Office Walk-In Hours
9:00–11:30 AM and 1:00–4:45 PM, Sept. 21 – Oct. 2
To accommodate the increase in graduate students depositing
theses and dissertations for October graduation, the Graduate
College Thesis Office will temporarily offer additional walk-in hours.
Morning walk-in hours will be in effect Monday, September 21,
through Friday, October 2, the deposit deadline for doctoral students.
Beginning October 5, the Thesis Office will offer walk-in hours
from 1:00 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. There will be
no walk-in hours on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Earn an MBA while Pursuing a Graduate Degree
If you are interested in obtaining an MBA while you are pursuing
a graduate (master’s or PhD) degree in another department, you
may be able to do so. To learn more, plan to attend an information
session on Thursday, September 17, at 5:00 p.m. The information
session will be held in the Business Instructional Facility in room 3007
(located at the corner of Sixth Street and Gregory Drive).

Deadlines for December 2009 and beyond are listed on the
Graduate College’s academic calendar at

Important dates include:
Nov. 13: Last day to take final exam (defense) for December doctoral degree
Dec. 4: Last day to deposit December doctoral dissertations
Dec. 11: Last day to deposit December master’s theses
Revised Graduate College thesis requirements will be available
to students on October 5 at www.grad.illinois.edu/thesis/.
Students interested in electronically depositing a master’s thesis
or doctoral dissertation for December 2009 graduation should
watch for further details in a future edition of GradLinks.

Write a Winning Personal Statement
The Writers Workshop is offering brief personal statement
workshops this semester for students who are writing personal
statements or any other type of application essay. Call 333-8796
to a reserve a spot at one of these times:
Tuesday, September 22, 4:00 pm
Wednesday, September 23, 4:00 pm
Thursday, September 24, 4:00 pm
Sessions will be interactive, starting with a brief presentation
introducing the concept of personal statements, followed by
a discussion on some strategies and pitfalls, sample statements,
and time for questions and answers. Students will also have an
opportunity to get individual feedback on their own personal
statements if time allows.

Town Hall Discussion for Graduate and Undergraduate Students
**Illinois Student Senate- Special Session
Wednesday, September 9th 7:00 PM, Illini Union, Pine Lounge
An open, student led dialogue on issues impacting all students
at the University. Emphasis will be on the current admissions
situation and the Senate Executive Committee's resolution put
forth at the University Senate meeting (voting will be on
Monday, September 14th). Share your thoughts on other topics
up for discussion, including but not limited to: H1N1, GEO contract,
Student Life. If you have any questions or cannot attend the
meeting but have comments to share, please contact
