1. Deposit Deadlines for December Graduation
Academic deadlines for December 2009 graduation are posted at:

Important dates include:
Nov. 13: Last day to take final exam (defense) for December doctoral degree
Dec. 4: Last day to complete deposit of December doctoral dissertations
Dec. 11: Last day to complete deposit of December master’s theses

2. Deadline to Add a Second-half-session Course for Fall 2009
Friday, November 6, 2009 is the last day to add a second half-session
course for Fall 2009 registration without departmental approval.
Registration must be done by submitting a completed Late
Registration Form to the Graduate Student Academic Services office.

3. Thesis Deposit Workshops and New Requirements for Fall 2009
Wednesdays: November 4, November 18
All workshops are 4:30 – 6:00 PM in 100 Noyes Lab
Do you plan to complete a thesis or dissertation for December 2009
graduation? Are you curious about the advantages of the new ETD
option that is now available to you? Mark Zulauf, Coordinator of the
Graduate College Thesis Office, will cover the new thesis submission
and review process, as well as look at the deadlines, supplementary
materials required for deposit, and newly revised thesis requirements.
Note that there are changes to thesis requirements in effect for
December 2009 graduation. A full list is available at:

5. Learning Theories...and Teaching
Wednesday, November 4, 12:00 - 1:30 PM, 428 Armory Building
The workshop will discuss some of the basic ideas about how students
learn, looking for insights about teaching practice that can be gleaned
from theories of learning. The discussion of theory will stay at a fairly
basic level, with the focus being on teaching practice. This is part of a
series, but attendance at both workshops is not required. Sponsored
by the Center For Teaching Excellence (CTE). Certificate credit will be

6. Cultural Intelligence: Implications for the College Classroom
Thursday, November 5, 4:00 PM, 428 Armory Building
This workshop is not designed to provide a laundry list of specific
behaviors related to one culture or another; its aim is to raise
awareness of the role culture plays in students' perceptions of
and interactions with others. The goal of this workshop is to help
students develop cultural intelligence - a way of thinking and being
that can be applied to interactions with students from any number
of cultural backgrounds.

The Writers Workshop is offering brief personal statement workshops
for students who are writing personal statements or any other type of
application essay. Students should call 333-8796 to a reserve a spot at
one of these times.
Sessions will be interactive, starting with a brief presentation given
by our consultants introducing the concept of personal statements,
followed by a discussion on some strategies and pitfalls, sample
statements, and time for questions and answers. Students will also
have an opportunity to get individual feedback on their own personal
statements if time allows.

8. New Horizons in International Security: An Interdisciplinary
Graduate Student Conference in Security Studies, April 9-10, 2010
Abstract Submission Deadline: January 15, 2010
The "New Horizons in International Security" conference seeks
to bring together graduate students from a variety of disciplines
who specialize in topics related to war, peace, and international
security. Submissions are strongly encouraged from scientists and
engineers with research interests related to international security,
as well as from graduate students in the social sciences and humanities.
The conference is an initiative of the Program in Arms Control,
Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS) at the University
of Illinois, with generous support from the Graduate College
Focal Point Initiative.

9. Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft, & Design
Monday, November 2, 5:30 PM, Krannert Art Museum, Room 62

Women's Resource Center, The School of Art & Design, Gender
and Women's Studies, and The Department of Media & Cinema Studies.
The screening and lecture will focus on the new wave of craft makers,
artists and designers from 15 American cities. This movement of artists,
crafters and designers recognize a marriage between historical techniques,
punk and DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional
handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art. This event is

communication among student leaders and organizations on campus.

12.Dissertation Awards
Applications are due December 14, 2009.
The Survey Research Laboratory announces the annual Robert Ferber
Dissertation Award and the Seymour Sudman Dissertation Award, both
for excellence in survey research as part of an ongoing doctoral
dissertation project. UIUC doctoral candidates are eligible-these awards
are open to any PhD student on campus with a dissertation that broadly
relates to survey methods. Past winners have come from an array of
disciplines in the social sciences, humanities, and business. A cash award
of $2,500 will be given to the winner of each of these two awards (only
one application is needed to be considered for both awards).

images that can support your research in art, architecture, the humanities
