Graduate College - Grievance Policies

Students, faculty, and staff at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are a diverse group whose personalities, experiences, activities, and personal goals vary widely. The Graduate College staff's experiences suggest that most conflicts and problems that arise in this environment can be resolved informally, without invoking formal grievance procedures. See advice about effective problem-solving.

Occasionally, it is not possible to resolve a problem informally. In such cases, a graduate student may:

  1. Elect to file a formal grievance with his or her department/unit, if the unit has a written grievance procedure approved by the Dean of the Graduate College, or
  2. File directly with the Graduate College.

Students should be aware of differences between the Graduate College and department/unit grievance policies. For example, some unit grievance policies may permit the student to request that there be no graduate student representation on the grievance committee.
