Administering NIH Training Grants
Revised October 2005
Tuition and Fee Charges to NIH Training Grants
Twice a year (~December and June) tuition and fee charges will be assessed to the NIH training grants using the government formula (currently $3,000 + 60% of the balance of tuition assessed). The Graduate College Fellowship Office will work with the units to make sure that assessments are charged to the appropriate grants for each student.
Concurrent Appointments for Trainees
NIH policy requires all fellows to pursue their research training full time, and the University defines full-time as 40 hours per week. NIH recognizes that fellows may seek part-time employment "incidental to their training program to offset further their expenses", but expects that compensation will be for "limited part-time employment" apart from the normal training activities and, under no circumstances, may any stipend supplementation or concurrent appointment "interfere with, detract from, or prolong" the fellow's training program.
Given the NIH guidelines, the University policy for students supported by NIH training grants is that concurrent appointments may not exceed 25% and should not exceed a single semester. Prior approval by the Graduate College is required for all concurrent appointments. Compensation for an assistantship may not be paid from a research grant that supports the same research that is part of the trainee's planned training experience funded by NIH. The NIH tuition and fee formula will continue to be charged to training grants regardless of additional appointments.
