Social Security Eligibility and Application
F-1 OR J-1 *P-1-00209* Students
- Determine their eligibility to apply for the SSN
- They must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 10 days
- They MUST have an offer of employment
- They MUST have completed check-in procedures at International Student and Scholar Services
- If they are in F-1 status they must be registered for classes (Students in J-1 status do not need to be registered)
- Prepare the application materials they will need to take
- completed application form
- university admission letter
- passport
- I-94 card
- I-20 or DS-2019
- ISSS letter of eligibility
- In order to obtain the ISSS letter of eligibility, the student must bring a letter verifying employment or a pay stub, and their I-20 or DS-2019.
- F-1 students are required to be registered to obtain a letter of eligibility.
- photocopy of their I-20 or DS-2019
- photocopy of the ID page in their passport
- photocopy of I-94 card
- photocopy of the visa page in their passport and
- pay stub or letter verifying your employment
- the letter verifying on-campus employment must include:
- identity of student employee
- job description
- anticipated or actual employment start date
- number of hours student is expected to work
- employer identification number (EIN) (37-6000511 for UIUC)
- employer contact information, telephone number, and name of student’s immediate supervisor
- original signature
- signatory's title
- date
- the letter verifying on-campus employment must include:
- Apply at the Social Security Office – 101 S. Country Fair Drive, Champaign, IL 61821 (orange or green bus line) -- Phone: (217) 398-5399
Note: J-1 students whose DS-2019 was not issued by the UIUC must obtain an eligibility letter from their J-1 program sponsor.
