"How to Find a Job Outside Academia, Even if You Aren't Sure That You Want One"

Susan Basalla, co-author of 'So What Are You Going to Do With That?': Finding Careers Outside Academia, will talk about exploring non-academic jobs for advanced-degree holders. Employment Authorization Opportunities for International Students

Tuesday, March 11, 3:00-4:30 p.m., 407 Illini Union

Assistant Director Emma Swift from the Office of International Student and Scholar services will discuss employment authorization opportunities available to international students. This workshop will give overview information on OPT and CPT work authorizations as well as information about how to apply.

Effective Online Teaching

Saturday, March 8, 1:00-4:00 p.m., 142 Psychology Building

Find out everything from the basics to the details about online instruction from veteran online teachers. The workshop will have two 70-minute sessions with a 10 minute intermission. Topics covered include: steps and considerations in developing an online course, student use of learning technology outside the classroom, collaborative/group learning strategies online, Synchronous and asychronous elements of online classes and using the right (online) tool for the job. FREE Admission. Refreshments served.

CTE Teaching Workshops

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) has announced its teaching workshops, workshop series, reading groups, and learning communities for Spring 2008. All faculty, staff, and graduate students are welcome to attend. View the list at

The Savvy Researcher Workshop Series

The Savvy Researcher Workshop Series is sponsored by the University Library. All workshops held in the Undergraduate Library, Room 291. Registration preferred.

How To Be a Better RA/TA
Thursday, March 6, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Geared towards Research and Teaching Assistants, this library workshop will introduce several time saving tips. Topics include the basics of working for others (e.g. proxy authorizations and departmental charge accounts), current awareness services, PapersInivted, how to locate dissertations, and how to use RefWorks, a personal citation database.

Librarians will give you the lowdown on how they organize their own research materials using several different strategies including the GTD method (Getting Things Done), and citation management, current awareness tools, social bookmarking and quick tips.

Even librarians use Google Scholar! Improve your searching by learning tricks of the trade using advanced features of Google Scholar. Learn the benefits and limitation of what Google Scholar can do for you. Also, learn about the new Google Book project and how to find online books.
