Why Internationalize Graduate Education?

Dr. Diana Carlin from the University of Kansas (KU) will speak on the topic of Internationalizing Graduate Education. Carlin served as Dean of the Graduate School and International Programs at KU from 2000-2007. In addition to her research on political communication, Professor Carlin has lectured extensively on internationalizing faculty and graduate education. She will discuss the benefits to both faculty and students of internationalizng the graduate education experience. There will be a question and answer session and reception following the presentation.
Dr. Carlin's research and writing interests focus on political communication, especially political debates, speech writing, public sphere, and women in politics. She developed a national research project on presidential debates, DebateWatch, which began in 1996 and has been a part of the Commission on Presidential Debates voter education programs in every election cycle since. Carlin served on the advisory board for the Commission for 13 years and conducted research that provided input into current debate formats. She was selected by the U.S. State Department and several Nongovernmental Organizations to lecture or serve as an advisor on debate and voter education projects in Russia, Moldova, Benin, Belarus, and Georgia. She was selected as a Mortar Board Outstanding Educator in Fall 1998, and in Spring 1999 she received the Steeples Award for Outstanding Service to the state of Kansas. In August 1999 Dr. Carlin was selected as a Kemper Teaching Fellow, and she received the Order of Omega Outstanding Faculty Award in 2001 and a Faculty Award of Merit from the KU Athletics Department in 2007. She was President of the Central States Communication Association in 2006 and was Dean of the Graduate School and International Programs at KU from 2000-2007. She served as the Dean in Residence and Director of International Outreach at the Council of Graduate Schools in 2007-2008.
